Fossilized Stromatolite Slab
Fossilized Stromatolite Slab
Petrified stromatolites (meaning “layered rock”) are the oldest fossils on Earth! They are three-billion-year-old mats of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), which were the first forms of life on the planet! They are even thought by scientists to have generated the oxygen in the atmosphere. Luckily for lapidaries they also look incredible! The fossils are characterized by layers of billowing shapes resembling mushrooms, with lots of fantastic contrast and linear detail. In this specimen, dark contours cluster tightly together in the center and radiate out, morphing into chestnut-brown swells, which are encapsulated by the lighter, organic forms of the fossil along the rind. The rind itself is particularly dramatic in its formations. An incredible piece to own both for its fossil history and striking detail! From Wyoming.
This is a rough, unpolished slab. Please observe images closely for flaws, as some degree of that is normal. Pictured wet and dry.
